Behind the scenes
On the occasion of the 12th birthday of the European Diploma in Radiology, the European Board of Radiology wants to share some secrets from the stars behind the EDiR.
Light will be shed on all the people who make its success possible year after year through their excellent work and dedication.
EDiR SCIENTIFIC BOARD
Within the EDiR Scientific Board, chaired by its Director, three committees of esteemed European radiologists dedicated to education operate alongside a dynamic working group of young talent.
WRITTEN EVALUATION COMMITTEE
Currently, the Written Evaluation Committee, comprising leading experts from diverse European and non-European institutions, oversees the initial exam section, consisting of 78 Multiple Response Questions and 24 Short Cases. With 16 members and team leaders assigned to specific subspecialties, they adhere to the exam blueprint, utilising multiple review methods to ensure balance.
Under the guidance of Prof. Vernooij, the committee convenes biannually to review questions with unexpected difficulty or discriminatory ability, providing constructive feedback to contributors. These meetings also address strategic and managerial concerns pertinent to the committee’s operations.
CORE COMMITTEE
European and non-European radiology leaders and their teams oversee the last section of the exam, comprising 10 CORE Cases. Like the Written Evaluation Committee, 11 members submit material thrice annually for their respective subspecialties, aiming for excellence and balance. Through four revisions and manual marking by our examiner pool, the CORE Cases maintain high standards.
Members of both the Written Evaluation and CORE Committees review, analyse, and enhance exam material. Each committee meeting includes an agenda item for analysing and reviewing cases from previous exams. Additionally, members receive feedback on their submitted cases’ performance after each exam.
Words from testimonials

I personally scrutinise every exam before it is conducted to remove any errors or ambiguities. In doing so, I always have our EDiR candidates in mind, as I want each of them to have a positive experience in taking the exam and be able to show what they are capable of.”

This gives me the opportunity to control the quality of the images of all cases, the quality of the questions and the degree of difficulty of the cases. Together with all members, it is possible to guarantee an exam which is in balance with the expected knowledge; one that accurately represents the candidate’s radiology skills and knowledge.”

STANDARDS COMMITTEE
The Standards Committee, comprising esteemed radiology experts with a strong educational focus, adopts a theoretical and global perspective. It consists of six members, including representatives from entities like the Radiology Trainees Forum Subcommittee of the European Society of Radiology and the European Union of Medical Specialists, alongside the chair.
Members collaborate on educational material creation, such as the EDiR – The Essential Guide and the ESR EDiR Study Guide. The committee chair attends all Written Evaluation and CORE Committee meetings to gather key insights, ensuring alignment with educational standards. This collaborative oversight, alongside the presence of the EDiR Scientific Director, enables comprehensive examination process management and educational material enhancement through data analysis and suggestions for improvement.
Our Process
Find out where you stand in your knowledge of radiological fundamentals with the EDiR Training Evaluation (EDiRTE) – a self-assessment test aimed at reviewing your understanding of general radiology.
- Preliminary selection of cases according to the blueprint
- The members of the committee review again and approve the selection of cases
