Behind the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR) is a network of radiology experts working together to ensure the scientific quality of the examination and support radiologists throughout their preparation.

The EDiR structure brings together two complementary missions: maintaining a rigorous, consistent and internationally recognised examination, and developing high-quality educational resources that help candidates prepare for it.

EDiR SCIENTIFIC BOARD

The EDiR Scientific Board provides the scientific framework behind the European Diploma in Radiology.

It brings together the expertise responsible for the examination, quality assurance and educational development, ensuring that the different areas of EDiR work towards the same standards and objectives.

At the heart of this structure are two complementary leadership roles:

EDiR Scientific Director

Scientific quality, examination standards and recognition

The EDiR Scientific Director oversees the scientific quality and consistency of the examination and its quality assurance framework.

The role also supports the recognition and standing of the EDiR internationally, working with national radiological societies, training bodies and other relevant stakeholders.

Its mission is to ensure that the EDiR continues to represent a rigorous and reliable European standard in radiology.

EDiR Academy Director

Education, preparation and innovation

The EDiR Academy Director leads the development of the EDiR educational portfolio and the resources designed to support radiologists in their preparation.

The role brings together educational expertise, candidate feedback and new approaches to learning to continuously develop and improve EDiR preparation resources.

The EDiR Academy Director works in close alignment with the EDiR Scientific Director and the EDiR quality assurance framework, connecting education and assessment within the same EDiR ecosystem.

The teams behind EDiR

The work of the EDiR Scientific Board is supported by specialised committees and teams, each contributing expertise to a different part of the EDiR.

Case Collection Committee

The Case Collection Committee contributes to the development and continuous renewal of the clinical material used for EDiR assessment.

Its work helps ensure that EDiR cases remain relevant, representative and appropriate for assessing radiological knowledge and clinical reasoning.

Quality Assurance Committee

The Quality Assurance Committee supports the scientific consistency, reliability and quality of the EDiR examination.

Through structured quality assurance processes and review, the committee helps ensure that EDiR assessment continues to meet the standards expected of a European diploma in radiology.

EDiR Academy

The EDiR Academy brings together experienced EDiR experts and outstanding EDiR holders to shape the next generation of EDiR preparation.

By combining established expertise with the perspective of radiologists who have successfully completed the EDiR, the Academy develops new educational initiatives while continuously reviewing and improving existing EDiR resources.

Its aim is simple: to provide candidates with relevant, high-quality resources that support their journey towards the EDiR.

EDiR Holders Team

The EDiR Holders Team brings the perspective and experience of radiologists who have successfully completed the EDiR into the continued development of the diploma.

Their first-hand understanding of the candidate journey provides valuable insight into EDiR initiatives and educational resources.

AI Experts Team

The AI Experts Team explores how developments in artificial intelligence can contribute to EDiR education and preparation while safeguarding the scientific integrity of the examination.

Its work supports the responsible exploration of new tools and approaches relevant to radiology education.

One EDiR ecosystem

Scientific standards and education are two sides of the same mission.

The EDiR Scientific Director and EDiR Academy Director work alongside the committees, experts and EDiR holders who contribute their knowledge and experience to the continuous development of the diploma.

Together, they help ensure that EDiR not only provides a high-quality European examination, but also supports radiologists in developing the knowledge and skills needed to reach that standard.

“ In order to keep the EDiR in full compliance with the ESR training standards of a general radiologist, the Standards Committee monitors the content and difficulty level of the EDiR exams and reassures their compatibility with the learning objectives of ESR European Training Curriculum for Radiology (levels I and II). To achieve this objective, the chairperson regularly attends all EDiR committee meetings including those of the CORE and Written Evaluation committees. How the EDiR Exam is Built

Submission of materials

The team leader of each subspecialty sends the requested material to the EBR office

First quality control

The EBR office checks that the material has the correct format for the EDiR

Second quality control

The coordinator and their team check the content of the material: No ambiguous questions, expected level of difficulty for a general radiologist, etc.

Exam preparation

Preliminary selection of cases according to the blueprint
The members of the committee review again and approve the selection of cases

Final quality control

The EDiR Reviewers, under the supervision of the corresponding committee chair, carry out the final review of the examination.
